T3 student releases software to process side scan sonar datasets to aid aquatic research

Cameron Bodine, a PhD student co-advised by Dr. Dan Buscombe (Marda Science) and Dr. Toby Hocking (Machine Learning Lab), released PING Mapper: a Python interface for reading, processing, and mapping side scan sonar data from low-cost sonar systems. The software allows researchers and scientists to turn inexpensive fish finders into scientific instruments to support aquatic research. A preprint documenting PING Mapper’s workflows is available on Earth ArXiv, and has been accepted for publication in AGU’s Earth and Space Science journal.
