NAU professor Dr. Kevin Gurney and Dr Paul Shepson (Dean of Meterology at Stonybrook) published a commentary in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences calling for a new Greenhouse Gas Information Service in the US. The authors argue that the current state of GHG information is inadequate to meet the US reductions promised, serve the large number of emissions reduction players (corporations, cities, states, NGOs), and mobilize the scale of capital investment needed to plan, track, and verify emission reductions. They describe the prototype system developed in the scientific community and its near-term potential for “operationalization”.
