New grants to support environmental change research in tropical and boreal forests

Tropical and boreal ecosystems are responding to rapid climatic changes, and SICCS faculty members are at the forefront of this important research. Six new grants from NSF and NASA will fund climate change research led by members of the GEODE Lab. These new grants span topics ranging from vegetation changes, carbon cycling, fires, heat waves, and caribou populations:

1) Jantz & Goetz: NASA Applied Sciences Program, Strengthening Natural Resource Management with New Protected Area Connectivity Tools.  Total Amount:  $1,181,959  (selected with funding to start Sept 2021).

2) Mack (Ecoss) / Goetz & Berner (SICCS):  NSF Collaborative Research: Climate warming and increasing wildfire in the boreal forests of Northwestern North America: Will vegetation change slow the feedback?  Total Amount:  $1,099,399 (selected with funding to start Nov 2021).  (Public Abstract)

3) Berner & Goetz:  NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory: Diagnosing and attributing Arctic-Boreal carbon fluxes using in situ and satellite CO2 monitoring network.  Total Amount: $92,579  (selected with funding to start Aug 2021).

4) Berner & Goetz:  NSF Collaborative Research: Fate of the Caribou – Populations and Distributions in the New Arctic.  Total Amount: $717,941 (selected with funding to start Nov 2021). (Public Abstract)

5) Berner:  NASA  New Investigator Program:  Mapping plant biomass distribution and change across the rapidly warming Arctic tundra biome.  Total Amount:  ~$374,515 (selected with funding to start sometime this Fall).

6) Goetz, Jantz & Burns / NAU 21-0243:  NASA Carbon Cycle Science: Carbon consequences of Amazon forest fragmentation.  Total Amount: $273,668 (selected with funding to start Sept 2021).
