{"id":2581,"date":"2022-03-30T09:45:32","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T16:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecoinfo.nau.edu\/?post_type=news&#038;p=2581"},"modified":"2022-03-30T09:58:08","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T16:58:08","slug":"grand-canyon-river-guides-training-on-drought-impacts-in-the-southwest","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/ecoinfo.nau.edu\/index.php\/news\/grand-canyon-river-guides-training-on-drought-impacts-in-the-southwest\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand Canyon River Guides training on drought impacts in the Southwest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, SICCS researchers played a role in continuing education for professional Grand Canyon river guides. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcrg.org\/aboutus.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Canyon River Guides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professional organization for river guides with a membership of more than 1700, provides information to guides through their quarterly publication, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcrg.org\/bqr.php\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boatman\u2019s Quarterly Review<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BQR), and an annual spring training seminar (GTS). Drs Kimberly Samuels-Crow and Kiona Ogle along with graduate student and USGS researcher Emily Palmquist (Biology) wrote an article for BQR entitled \u201cDrought impacts on Southwestern Landscapes.\u201d On March 27, Dr. Samuels-Crow joined other researchers from around the region to present relevant scientific information to the guides at GTS before the river season begins. The BQR article and the GTS talk covered topics including changing temperature and precipitation patterns across the region since the start of the 21st century along with ecosystem impacts, including large-scale tree mortality and impacts on riparian vegetation along dam-controlled rivers. More than 20,000 people raft Grand Canyon annually thanks to the expertise of professional guides.
